It Takes Two to Tango: LinkedIn/Twitter Interface


Imagine that you have two employees working on the same project. They are both talented and diligent; however, they don’t coordinate their efforts at all. Do you think there is any efficiency lost due to them not setting a common strategy and not working in sync? You bet there is! And yet, this is exactly what happens when you are not coordinating your efforts on various social media platforms, for example on LinkedIn and Twitter. You are working hard on both platforms, but not generating nearly the same results or the same return on investment as you would if you took a more comprehensive, holistic approach.

In social media as in life at large, it’s crucial to set a comprehensive strategy and ensure that your various efforts are taking you in the same direction. 

Many blog posts about social media address just one platform or address multiple platforms but not their interface; in particular, little comprehensive information is available on LinkedIn/Twitter interface. Seeing this gap, I decided to write this article and explain how your coordinated, synchronized activity on these two platforms can strengthen your presence on both.

I will address how to increase traffic to your LinkedIn profile/Twitter bio, how to dramatically boost your engagement on both platforms and how to grow the number of your connections and followers. 

Bonus: I will also touch on how to amplify your relationship building and branding efforts. The core action items to take are:

  1. Drive Traffic to Your LinkedIn Profile and Twitter Bio by Leveraging the Power of Cross Reference.
    • Add your Twitter account in Contact Info section of your LinkedIn profile. But don’t stop there. Include your Twitter handle and a call to action in your LinkedIn Summary (for example, “Follow me on Twitter @mariafafard“). Some professionals focused on boosting their Twitter presence include their Twitter handle in their LinkedIn headline (for example, “A Project Turnaround Specialist, I Tweet About Project Management @mariafafard“).
    • Vice versa, if your primary goal is attracting visitors to your LinkedIn profile, include a link to your LinkedIn profile in your Twitter bio.
  2. Boost Your Engagement by Promoting Your LinkedIn Blog Articles on Twitter.
    • When you post an article on LinkedIn publishing platform, remember to promote it on Twitter. You can either use social sharing buttons at the top and at the bottom of your LinkedIn article to tweet a link to it or, even better, go to Twitter directly, say something to introduce your article, include a link to it and attach a relevant image. Sean Gardner (@2morrowknight), Forbes #1 social media power influencer, refers to this practice as cross-posting in his article “5 Extraordinary Ways to Use the LinkedIn Blog”. Says Sean: “Whenever my links go live, I share them on four to five other social media networks to get traction. If this isn’t “cross-posting”, I don’t know what is.”
    • Also, tweet the best quotes from your article on a recurring basis.
  3. Increase Your Engagement by Double Dipping.
    • When posting a status update on LinkedIn, occasionally use the option to post on Twitter simultaneously. To do that, go to your LinkedIn home page, input text into the Status Update box and instead of default option “Share with Public”, select “Share with Public + Twitter”. Use this feature sparingly and remember that if you are including an image in your LinkedIn status update, it will only show up as a link on Twitter which is less effective than an actual image in a Tweet (tip courtesy of Adam Khan (@Khanoisseur), a Head of Digital Transformation at L’Oreal). That being said, if you are posting a nice quote or a brief professional update, it is perfectly fine to kill two birds with one stone and post on LinkedIn and Twitter simultaneously. Just remember to watch your number of characters as only the first 140 characters will show up on Twitter, regardless of how long your LinkedIn status update is.
    • Also, don’t forget that LinkedIn is a micro-blogging platform too: while your knee jerk reaction might be to simply tweet about something, consider posting a status update about it on LinkedIn as well.
  4. Nurture Relationships with Your Connections by Promoting Their LinkedIn Articles.
    • When you are promoting someone’s article on LinkedIn, it is a great idea to select “Share with Public + Twitter” option, especially if Twitter is one of the author’s preferred platforms.
    • Note that this is a great way to build a relationship with an influencer, as I explain in my article “How Do I Connect to an Influencer”.
  5. Grow Your Network by Cross Referencing in Tweets and Status Updates. 
    • If you are professional who is just starting out on Twitter, don’t forget to capitalize on a network you most probably already have on LinkedIn. Post a status update on LinkedIn asking your network to follow you on Twitter (for example, “Enjoyed my status updates? Why not follow me on Twitter as well, @mariafafard? I’ll follow back!”). Make sure to include a nice image to attract attention to your status update and re-post this status update once in a while, for example once a month.
    • Vice versa, it’s a good idea to occasionally tweet a link to your LinkedIn profile and invite your followers on Twitter to connect with you on LinkedIn.
  6. Give a Boost to Your Brand Building Efforts. Make sure that your brand is consistent across LinkedIn and Twitter. Don’t confuse your audience with mixed messages.

These are the core interface points between LinkedIn and Twitter. By syncing up your efforts on these two platforms, you will be able to enhance your exposure, increase your engagement and grow your network.
